“A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” — Lao Tzu
Travelling in its literal sense means, going from Place A to Place B. However, travelling is not just about reaching Place B. It’s about the whole bouquet of experiences that you acquire during your transit from Place A in order to reach Place B. With that being said, here are the 5 strong ways in which travelling helps in your personal growth :
1. You gain a fresh perspective on your life :
When you escape from your regular environment, your frame of reference changes and you can look at your life as a neutral, outsider. In life we often get stuck in our day to day routines that magnanimity of creation starts escaping us. During our day to day lives, we get caught up in our emotions that we often over play our problems. Travelling to new places often helps us escape our emotions, which makes us develop a more balanced view of the situations in our life.
2. Travelling helps us understand the world better :
When you travel, you visit new places, experience different environments. Travelling makes you meet new people from different cultures. It makes you realize that life is much larger than merely a set of problem solving sequence which we make life out to be, when we get too caught up in our heads. During your voyages you meet new people. Getting to talk to them makes you realize that some people are struggling to have things you often take for granted. Its humbling to realize the privileges you have been blessed with. An attitude of gratitude rather than that of grumbling often entails. Also, when travelling you meet new people from different cultures. They often have different thought patterns than yours thanks to their different upbringings but if you keep talking to them you realize that we humans though varied in temperaments and traditions have the same basic needs, the need of being cared, of being loved and of being happy.
3. Travelling makes you an interesting conversationalist :
If you have been struggling with holding conversations with people travelling may just be the answer for you. When you narrate the interesting encounters during your expeditions, people want to listen to you. The tale of your adventures naturally draws attentions towards you because you are the window through which others momentarily escape their mundane lives and experience a different world.
4. Travelling makes you develop closer relations or makes you realize about the superficial ones :
In our day to day lives, every person is pursuing different goals. Some one’s goal is to pass an exam, while other’s may be to get a job. Someone’s goal may be to get promoted in their job, while other’s goal may be to meet the quarterly sales target. However when you travel together with your partner, spouse or friend you goals become same. The goal of co travelers is how to transit from Place A to Place B. Which routes to take ? Where to make stoppages ? What to eat ? Suddenly you are a team working towards the same goals. This either brings you closer to your co-travelers or drift you apart from them. In my experience the closest personal bonds that I have developed have generally been due to a trip that we took together.
5. Through travelling, you learn how to handle adversities :
When you are on a road trip, your vehicle may break down in the middle of no where. During your transit, you may experience a road blockage or you may fall sick. While travelling, things often pop up, unexpectedly. These unexpected occurrences often force you to think on your feet. The more adversities you handle, the richer you get in experience. This makes you more self-confident in your ability to handle hardships in life.
Therefore travelling to new places is the best investment of time and money you can make. Mark Twain put it beautifully, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” I shall conclude by saying, pack your bags, experience different places, different cultures while you can because twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the trips you didn’t take than by the ones you did.
