Mastery of the Mind
Learning it the Hard Way…
I had just passed out of college. With a decent paying job at hand and a great set of friends around me, life was going as per plans.
When I had entered college, it was everything I had wished for . With all the things appearing to be in place, I was having a wonderful time in life. However, things were about to take a downward spiral and teach me some invaluable lessons in the process.
They say, life doesn’t come with caveats. I found it to be true !
While I was engaging myself in hedonism, I had forgotten one of the most important principles in life.
If you don’t control your mind, your mind controls you !
Amidst all the enjoyment, I had forgotten to maintain a vigil over my mind. Soon, life started testing me again.
However, when I tried using the most powerful tool known to man, i.e.: the all conquering mind, to my rescue, I found that it had become timid.
Soon the forces of the mind had started running amok, making me doubt everything that was around me. Forcing me into dank submission every time. Leaving me mentally and physically exhausted from morning till night .
Ahhh! Goodness gracious me !
Aye, Aye Spidey !
Mind is the most powerful tool in the universe. However as Spider Man said:
With great power, comes great responsibility.
A man must know how to use this astonishing tool effectively. If you can use it to your advantage, you can do things which you thought were impossible for you. However, if you don’t know how to control it, it can wreak havoc on you and the ones around you. (Believe me, I have seen both sides of the coin 😉 )
Developing A Holistic Approach
All physical and spiritual practices known to man, have one ultimate purpose – mastery over one’s mind.
Some Indian Yogis, the Shaolin Monks have been known to be pretty freak martial artists. The ancient Greeks, believed that physical fitness and mental clarity were two sides of the same coin. A good citizen was virtuous in mind and in body; training was a civic duty, rather than a lifestyle choice.
One of the great polymaths, Aristotle, maintained detailed physical coaching manuals that were ingrained in his philosophical works. The Greek philosopher Galen even suggested : “Doctors must train like athletes to achieve excellence in their practice. ”
No wonder then, one of the greatest martial artists ever, the legendary Bruce Lee was as much a philosopher, as he was an athlete.
The great Indian philosopher and monk, Swami Vivekananda said :
“Think of your own body, and see that it is strong and healthy; it is the best instrument you have. Think of it as being as strong as adamant, and that with the help of this body you will cross the ocean of life. Freedom is never to be reached by the weak. Throw away all weakness. Tell your body that it is strong, tell your mind that it is strong, and have unbounded faith and hope in yourself.”
Ultimately all our activities, both at a personal and group level are directed towards one goal : Personal Growth. However, the only way to achieve sustainable personal growth is by carrying out sincere physical, mental and spiritual practices.
